NEAR MISS – NO ACCIDENT TODAY. BUT WHAT ABOUT TOMORROW?
An object falls from above but narrowly misses a worker.
A forklift almost collides with someone.
Two vehicles nearly crash at an intersection.
No one is injured. Nothing is damaged. No accident occurs.
“That was lucky. Nothing happened.”
And everyone moves on.
But this mindset can lead to one of the most serious mistakes in safety management: a Near Miss is ignored simply because there was no consequence.
A NEAR MISS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE SAFE
A Near Miss is often treated as a lucky escape.
There is no injury, no damage, and no serious incident to investigate.
As a result, Near Misses can easily go unreported, unanalyzed, and ultimately unresolved.
But a Near Miss is not proof that the environment or system is safe.
Instead, it may indicate that the conditions for an accident were already present – the consequence simply did not occur this time.
A Near Miss ignored today may happen again tomorrow.
A second time. A tenth time. A hundredth time.
Until one day, the Near Miss becomes an Accident.
FROM WORKPLACE SAFETY...
In the workplace, Near Misses can result from many different factors:
Unsafe behaviors; missing or improperly used PPE; dangerous interactions between people and vehicles; entry into restricted areas; falling-object risks; and hazardous workplace conditions.
The objective should not be limited to identifying what happened after an accident.
We also need to recognize the behaviors and conditions that could create a Near Miss before an accident occurs.
Technology today can support the detection, recording, and analysis of these warning signals more systematically, particularly across large or continuously operating environments.
...TO ROAD SAFETY
The same principle can be applied to Road Safety.
Two vehicles nearly collide at an intersection but brake in time.
A vehicle makes a dangerous lane change without causing a crash.
A pedestrian and a vehicle pass through the same conflict point with only a small distance or time gap between them.
There may be no accident, but a traffic conflict has already occurred.
Technology can help identify risky driving behaviors, traffic conflict points, unsafe traffic conditions, deficiencies in traffic organization, and infrastructure issues that may increase risk.
Instead of analyzing only locations where accidents have already happened, data can also help us identify locations where accidents may be more likely to occur.
A DIFFERENT QUESTION ABOUT SAFETY
We often ask:
“How many accidents have occurred?”
It is an important question. But perhaps we should also ask:
“Before an accident happened, how many times did it almost happen – and we ignored the warning?”
When these warning signals are detected and recorded, they can become valuable data for understanding root causes, identifying risk patterns, and taking corrective action.
Detect → Record → Analyze → Improve → Prevent
This is also where technology can help shift safety management from reacting after incidents toward proactively identifying and preventing risks.
